5 REASONS YOU SHOULD DIY [DO-IT-YOURSELF]

So I was going to put up a DIY Sewing tutorial of how to make  Kimono but then I just got inspired to write about this. I'd do the Kimoni in my next DIY Project post.

DIY is an acronym for DO IT YOURSELF. It's so important to learn how to do things yourself and that's exactly what  I'm talking about in this post. There are a lot of advantages attached to doing things by yourself and I'm just going to share five with you in this post. These five reasons kind of sum up every other reason.

Your bank account would thank you for it! There's a direct relationship between knowing how to do things by yourself and saving money. When you know how to do a bunch of stuff yourself, you save a lot of money that could have been spent hiring others to do it for you. When I think about it, I'm glad I have made a lot of efforts to improve my photography skills by taking online classes, reading tutorials etc.  I'm currently attending fashion school not really because I want to be a fashion designer but because when I start buying wedding/birthday Aso-Ebi [lol] I don't have to spend additional money to make the clothes and waste my energy worrying that a tailor would spoil my cloth and anytime I see a pattern I like on the internet I can make it myself for so much less. Talk about being a bargain mistress! One time I went to dye my hair at the salon and they told me it would cost for thousand naira, I didn't have to think twice before I picked my bag and went home to do it myself after watching youtube videos. I saved the 4k and probably spent it on a pair of flats or something.

You discover yourself being intentional about doing things yourself helps you to discover parts of you that you probably didn't even know you had. It helps to keep you brain alive and busy. It alows you to experiment, make mistakes and learn.

You become a handy person especially when there's an emergency.
Like two weeks ago, a pipe in my house broke and when we called the plumber, he was far away. So I had to do  a quick fix before he came. If something spoils, the first thing I do is check youtube for a solution and try it myself but if it is a really complex situation I leave it to a professional. It's good to know how to do little things around the house like fix the TV or fix a cable or phone etc you never know when they would come in handy. I started learning how to make clothes on youtube and before I even started fashion school, I already made my first dress. It wasn't perfect but I've come a long way from there.

You can turn it into profit I recently did a photography job for really cool cash. and I'm thankful I was intentional about just learning photography for myself first. If I have to make clothes tomorrow to get side cash, I already know how. You never know when the things you randomly do by yourself would come in handy.
Because of this blog, I've taken basic coding classes, I have taken basic graphic design classes online not because I'm "Ijebu" or I can't afford to pay someone to do it for me but because there's nothing like knowing how to do things by myself. If I ever need side cash, I already what services to offer people. Learning to do things by yourself for yourself  is a plus, making money of out doing things you naturally love to do yourself by doing it for others is a MAJOR plus!

Lastly, you get to do things EXACTLY how you want it to be done.

I guess what I'm really saying in this post is that it's important to learn a skill. No knowledge is lost. That you learn a skill  doesn't mean you can't still have an amazing career it just gives you an edge. If there's something you do passionately why don't you take an extra step to perfect it. Whatever you know how to do is worth knowing how to do well. It doesn't necessarily have to be sewing or photography [like I have emphasized in this post, those are just things I personally love to do], it can be cooking or baking or shoemaking etc There are so many skills to learn! Let's get creative!

What are those things you enjoy doing yourself? Do share!

Super meaningful post. I enjoy sewing my own clothes.

Quite remarkably, DIY-ing encourages self sufficiency which inspires an entrepreneurial spirit.

  4. Well I can sew a little but sadly I don't have a machine at home. So most times I want to recycle an old piece I just cut it the way I want and give a tailor to bring it to life. DIY is the real mvp

  5. You made some solid points in this post, especially learning to code. There are so many errors on my blog that I've been meaning to get to. I need to just buckle down, learn to code & sort it out myself!

  6. Great post!

This is a reminder that I need to get my sewing hat on already. Bargain mistress- that got me laughing lol.

Also, learning to code +graphic design are definitely worth it and beyond just saving money, you get to understand details about your blog even though someone else is building it.

Thanks for this post. It was helpful!

  8. Reason number 6? Self satisfaction! I'm always looking at my nails, hair and face for an extra second when I do them myself. I made this bob wig the other day and my sister always reminded me that I cut it too short and the back looks like a scarecrow's head. But I'l look in the mirror and reply, "leave me! I did it myself." Lol.
